Psst...Perfume Lover

I thought I'd given up perfume forever — until I discovered fragrance made the way it was always meant to be.

I see you. The one who used to live for a beautiful scent — who had a whole collection, who chose perfume the way some people choose jewelry. And then slowly, quietly… you stopped. Just like I did.

The headaches. The chemical fog. The way synthetic fragrance started feeling like an assault instead of an adornment.

As a young girl, I was fascinated by my grandmother's glass mirror vanity tray, filled with these wildly shaped bottles holding mysterious liquids which I mostly found repulsive. But something about the setup of it all, the mystery, the preciousness, the elegance… I couldn't stay away. I'd play with them even though the smells turned my stomach. I'd watch my grandmother move with such simplicity and grace as she'd get ready in her adorable floral robe and slippers, curling pins in her hair and all. There was something I felt standing there that I couldn't name.

My grandmother must have noticed my adoration when I was little as she gifted me a mirror vanity tray of my own. It's no surprise that some of the first things I purchased when I started working were perfumes and my collection began. One of my aunts had a taste for the finer things, and it was through her influence that I first smelled real luxury fragrance — and fell in love. In that moment, a conclusion formed: high quality meant expensive.

I told myself that expensive perfume=high end=good smell. Inexpensive perfume=cheap=bad smell.

So naturally, my collection had to reflect that — quality, expensive, real. Or at least, what my budget at the time understood those words to mean. My collection included some classics: Legacy by Coach. Victoria's Secret's original Bombshell. Tommy Girl. Cool Water. Light Blue. The One.

I felt sophisticated. Elevated. Even a little sexy. Like I'd been let into a club that only women know about. My collection wasn’t from Target or Bath & Body Works, oh no- it was genuine, real perfumes.

Until I read the evidence...

The toxicity in conventional perfumes is real yet I didn't want to believe it. So I oscillated. Used them, avoided them. Justified it. Every other area of my life had gone toxin-free, so surely a little perfume wasn't so bad. Yet, the proof kept accumulating in my own body: remove the perfumes, and the headaches stopped. The skin got brighter, clearer. Sleep changed. I simply felt better, for longer.

It wasn't overnight. It was years of quietly downsizing, beginning with fewer bottles, then perfume only on clothes and never on my skin, then one day realizing I didn't reach for them anymore at all. Something had shifted without my forcing it. I'd released the association with what perfume meant — the sophistication, the ritual, the sense of arrival. And somewhere along the way, the more I explored essential oils the more I realized they were fulfilling the ritual, sense of arrival and sophistication I had associated with perfumes.

And to my surprise and delight the men responded to them more than they ever had to my perfumes. The oils didn't trigger complaints like the perfumes did. They invited curiosity. And beyond that, they were actually doing something, they were supporting mood, recovery, presence and more.

The point is: I closed the door on synthetic fragrance. Completely. My vitality, health and longevity were worth more than any synthetic scent.

I wasn't looking for anything more. I wasn't missing it. I was genuinely satisfied. My essential oils even sit on the same mirror vanity tray, arranged the way my old perfumes used to be.

The little girl at the vanity. The young woman who felt sophisticated and alive and a little bit secret in her scent. She never really left — she just found a cleaner way to live while she waited for the world to catch up.

And now it has.
